Pilates is a low-impact, dynamic method of exercise with a strong focus on breathing,
control and "core stability" (integrating our central stabilising mechanisms to improve
efficiency of movement).
It is named after Joseph Pilates, who established the method in the 1920s, and is
based on 8 principles: breathing, concentration, control, flowing movement, isolation,
centering, precision and routine. In the past it was used extensively by dancers and
performers, but today is practiced worldwide by people of all walks of life, including
people who suffer from back and neck pain.
The benefits of Pilates include:
► Increased overall tone, strength and endurance
► Improved posture and body awareness
► Decreased pain and stiffness, especially in the neck and back
► Relaxation and improved breathing efficiency
► Flatter and firmer abdominal muscles
► Injury prevention
► Heightened concentration
The combination of Physiotherapy and Pilates helps us achieve excellent results for
rehabilitation and treatment for back and neck pain and other injuries.
